Processes description Torrefaction
Torrefaction is a pyrolysis/thermolysis at lower temperature level.
During the process (15 to 120 minutes) the biomass will be predried, warmed up and particular pyrolysed. The pyrolysis gas will be a mixture of water, carbon dioxid, carbon monoxid and arganic acids.
Normally the process will be done with temperatures of 250 to 400ºC.
In reason of low temperature huge heat exchanger surfaces are required, because the heat exchange need the direct contact to a surface.
Torrefacted product is a very good heat insulator, too. So a good mixing device will be needed.
The process gas normally contents due to the lower process temperature a higher amount of acids. The condensate is acid, so it is very coorosive!
Main target
of this process is a reduction of the product volumina with increasing of the heating value for better transportation and storage.
Application
Coffee
Oldest application is the torrefying of coffee beans...
Wood
During torrefaction the wood's water content will be decrease down to 3%. The mass reduction will be 30% but the heating value increase from 10.5 - 17.7 to 19.9 - 22.7 MJ/kg.
Straw
During the torrefication process typically 60% of the mass is going into the process gas, but 40% of the mass is gotten as biomass coke with the double heating value of simple wood.
